Break Time

Summary

High pressure is taking control for the weekend into early next week with sunny skies and warming temps. Chances for showers will return later in the work week with high elevation snowfall possible.

Short Term Forecast

What a day yesterday was, especially in LCC where storm totals exceeded 30"!  Even pulling into the parking lot was impressive.  Look at the wall of snow at the edge of the parking lot and employee vehicles that are absolutely buried...

You literally see nothing but snow mounds where the cars are parked.  After seeing this, I was expecting some all-time conditions on the hill... I wasn't disappointed.  Here is my second run of the day:

Absolutely bottomless, light, fluffy pow!  On about my fourth run of the day, my friend and talented photographer John Shafer (@photojohnphoto) snapped this pic of me:

It was so deep, that you literally had to snap pics between turns or else you'd see nothing but white.  Luckily, I have bright red powder baskets on my Soul Poles so I just point one down hill and try to follow the red circle ahead of me.  Otherwise, it's impossible to see where you're going in that much powder.

Forecast:

Now that we've wrapped up that storm.  We can look ahead.  High pressure is taking control now and will be in control thru the weekend into early next week.  Spring skiing is on tap for the weekend with much warmer weather and sunny skies.  Don't forget to put on sunscreen if skiing this weekend.

For the first time in a long while, I have nothing to forecast storm-wise in the next 5 days.  A look at the ensemble plumes shows a flat line until later next week:

Even though this will be our longest dry spell since January, it's still only looking like less than a week.

Extended Forecast

Late next week we see the ridge start to amplify way up into western Canada.  This will allow a closed low to undercut the ridge and move into southern California and track toward the four corners region.  This should spread moisture into Utah with showers developing as early as Thursday of next week (maybe Wednesday if the GFS is correct).  This system will probably be on the warm side with high snow levels.  After that, we could see a more zonal (westerly) flow of systems moving into the Great Basin. We are too far out for details, but I'd expect things to get gradually more active during the last week of March.

Note: I am likely to take tomorrow (Saturday) off from forecasting for some family time.  I will have an updated forecast on Sunday morning.
