White Tuesday

Summary

Snow will fall in the high elevations today as a cold front moves thru the region. Snow will turn showery later today. We will have sunny skies and warmer temperatures for the rest of the week. We should see a generally quieter pattern for the rest of April.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday we saw off and on snow above 8000 feet. It was extremely wet on the mountain with on-mountain temps in the low to mid-30s. Lots of slush and mashed potatoes.  A cold front is pushing into the Wasatch and Wasatch front region this morning.  This is bringing heavy snowfall to the high elevations and rain to the valleys.  Ahead of the cold front, we saw additional heavy, wet snow in the high elevatons.  Alta is reporting 8" of snow since close yesterday and 12" in 24 hours with 15" since Sunday morning.  It looks like we will challenge for 2 feet of storm total up high.

Today's snow will fall hard this morning before tapering off and turning showery.  We will also see a rapid drop in temperatures and the snow will become a bit less dense.  Still not fluffier powder, but not mashed potatoes either.  Per the 12km NAM another 6+ inches of snow should be expected today:

Here is an animation of the cold front pushing thru.  Notice we get a quick NW flow behind the front:

NW flow should not be nearly as fruitful as last week's.

We will clear out on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday should be mostly sunny and warmer.

Extended Forecast

We will have a weak system move into the area this weekend.  We could see some high-elevation snow showers, largely driven by daytime heating.  At this time, I do not expect much in the way of accumulation.  The last 10 days of April looks relatively quiet.
