June Storm

Summary

A unseasonably wet and cold storm will bring rain and high elevation snowfall to Utah this weekend into early next week.

Short Term Forecast

It's been over a month since the last update when I did the season wrap-up post. Since then, things have generally continued to be warm and dry in Utah. This has really been an unusual spring in Utah, and because of it, the snow has melted very fast. Even if we didn't have COVID-19, Snowbird may have struggled to reach Memorial Day this year due to the rapid melt-off.

However, we do have a cold storm pushing in this weekend. This storm will bring rain, much colder temperatures and, eventually, chances for high elevation snow. It's not unprecedented to see snow in the high elevations this late in the season, but it is still somewhat unusual.

The rain will begin tonight, focusing mostly on eastern Utah up into the Uintas. Heavy rains will be possible thru Saturday. On Sunday, the cold front pushes through and we will see showers continue throughout the state, this time focusing on the Wasatch and Wasatch Front. Colder air will filter in on Sunday and snow levels will drop as low as 6000 feet by Sunday night. Mountain locations could see anywhere from a trace of snow up to several inches.

Due to our dry spring, this storm should come as welcome news. We could use a good soaking to add moisture to the soil and the plants and help mitigate what has been an unusually early start to fire season.

Extended Forecast

We should warm up very quickly behind this system with temperatures reaching the 80s in the valleys and 60s in the mountains by Wednesday of next week (6/10). There may be a chance for another cooler system toward mid-month.
