Sunny and Dry through the Weekend, Showers Next Week

Summary

High pressure is in control -- we have sunny, dry, and warm conditions likely through the weekend. We will see more active weather return next week in at least Northern Utah with showers and chances for high elevation snow.

Short Term Forecast

SATURDAY UPDATE:

A quick look at guidance this morning shows no new information of note. Still looks like showers develop on Tuesday into Wednesday in Northern Utah with perhaps some high elevation snow accumulation. Until then, expect mild and mostly sunny weather.

PREVIOUS:

High pressure is in control. A weak brush-by system yesterday kicked up winds a bit and increased clouds, but we should be back to sunny and warm through the weekend. A weak, dry cool front may cool us down a bit on Sunday, but otherwise, benign weather.

Attention is already on next week. A system will move into the region out of the northwest and slowly meander through the intermountain region. Starting on Tuesday or so, we should see chances for showers, primarily in Northern Utah. While temps aren't particularly cold with this system, we should still see snow in the high elevation. At this point, it looks like the best period for snowfall may be late Tuesday into Wednesday of next week. Showers then linger thereafter.

Here is the total precip mean of all GEFS ensembles through the end of next week (4/16):

Highest amounts will be in Northern Utah mountains, such as the Uintas, and to our east in Colorado. This seems to be a very typical spring, showery pattern and daytime heating could aid in shower development each day.

Extended Forecast

Beyond next week, who knows. Fantasy range in the models is anywhere from dry and sunny to wet and chilly. Very little confidence beyond the next 7 days.
