Brushed At Best

Summary

High pressure continues to be the story with few chances for snow in the forecast. A cooldown for tomorrow and perhaps a brush-by system middle of next week. Still hoping for a pattern change by the end of the month.

Short Term Forecast

I really have nothing new to say, unfortunately. Tonight, a weak front will skirt Utah and bring some breezes, clouds, and a slight chance for a high elevation flurry, but that's it. It will, however, cool us off in the high elevations by 10-15 degrees on Friday and Saturday. That cooler air aloft may help to scour out the inversions in the valleys as well, so there is some good news coming from this weak front.

High pressure continues in control next week. Models hinting that another system will brush us middle of the week (Jan 19-20) and could bring another cooldown and a slight chance for snow to northern Utah mountains, but it looks highly unlikely to be anything of note.

Extended Forecast

I wish I could say models have trended our way, but they have not. As I mentioned yesterday, the general trend has been to back off on the ridge retrograding west and instead it remains close to the coast in a position that should generally block most storm energy. The eastern US will see cold and snow while the west stays relatively mild and dry. This pattern looks locked in for most of the rest of January. All we can do is wait and hope...

This reminds me a bit of mid to late November where there just wasn't any hope in the models. Obviously, the big difference right now is that we are sitting on a healthy snowpack with plenty of terrain open so the skiing is still great if you like exploring the mountain or ripping groomers, it's just bad news for those of us who are itching for powder.

Patience, friends.
