Glancing Blows

Summary

Cooler temps heading into the weekend after a dry cold front moved through. Warming back up to begin the upcoming week. We will have a slight chance for mountain snow showers in Northern Utah midweek and late week as a couple of systems brush the region.

Short Term Forecast

Our weak, dry cold front moved through and we have cooled off at elevation since yesterday. This may help to scour out the haze in the valleys as inversions can lift without the cap of warm air above the cold layer. These cool temps will stay into the weekend and slowly warm into early next week. Haze is likely to return by early next week as inversions once again establish themselves in the lower valleys.

We do have a chance for some light snow next week per the current models. It's not much, but perhaps northern Utah mountains could get some light accumulation. Here is the latest GFS showing a storm pushing in on Wednesday into early Thursday of next week bringing light precipitation:

Again, this would only be good for a few inches at best in the mountains, but at least it's something. The Euro does not have much with this first wave, but does have a second system for Friday of next week that could also bring some light snow:

Again, not much, but it has something at the very least. The Canadian model, has precip with both of these systems and is also the most aggressive with amounts. Here is the first system in the Canadian GEM model:

And the second system in the Canadian:

While none of these solutions is exactly exciting, at least it's something to talk about. Perhaps we can manage a light refresh in the Wasatch. Also, these systems should help to keep the inversions at bay or give us periodic breaks. Better than nothing!

Extended Forecast

Long-range forecasts continue to look bleak. The blocking high pressure looks stronger and closer to us on each model run, which continues to limit our chances of storms. Obviously things can still change, but at this point, any big storms before the end of January looks unlikely. We may have to hope for a change in early February.
