Looking For Something

Summary

High pressure remains in control with sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures in the mountains returning for the upcoming week. A couple, mostly dry cold fronts will bring clouds mid-to-late week with some slightly cooler air, but we remain on stand-by as we search for the next significant storm.

Short Term Forecast

Yet another ho-hum forecast if you're looking for fresh snow. Conditions on the mountain remain great for skiing groomers and exploring off-piste terrain, but for powder hounds, we are forced to wait. Yesterday's forecast we talked about the chance that maybe we could catch some glancing blows with at least a light refresh or two for northern Utah mountains. Unfortunately, models over the last 24 hours have trended farther north and east with those systems, which means precipitation is looking more unlikely. Instead, we have high pressure remaining in control with warming temps aloft and the inversion re-strengthening after it was partially mixed yesterday.

We will still be brushed by cool fronts middle of the week and likely again late in the upcoming week, but at this point it looks like mostly light breezes, some clouds, and slightly cooler air. The EC ensemble suite shows that about a third of the ensembles still bring light precip to SLC:

I think even this might be optimistic as the operation runs show zilch across the board right now. Still, we will say that there's a slight chance of a few showers. However, for the most part, this entire upcoming week looks dry.

Extended Forecast

So when is it going to snow big again in Utah? Good question. I can't answer that right now. Probably not in the next 10 days. Perhaps not in the next 15 days which takes us through the end of the month. Long-range ensemble mean heights show a broad scale (synoptic) pattern that features high pressure over the western continental US with a trough in the east. Systems drop into the northern plains out of Canada, then curl back northeastward along the Atlantic coast. This pattern looks very stubborn and unlikely to change.

However, there are some signs of change right at the end of the month and/or the beginning of February. Too early to know anything about how this change may play out, but perhaps that is when we will return to stormier weather. Until such a potential pattern change is within 10-days, however, all we can really do is speculate and hope.
