Storm Day
Summary
Our storm arrives today with heavy snow in the high elevations this afternoon and evening. Snow showers continue tonight into Saturday morning with significant spring accumulation possible.
Short Term Forecast
Our storm is arriving and we will see snowfall pick up in intensity through the morning with the heaviest rates this afternoon and evening. Here is the radar, already showing areas of heavy precip around SLC:
Daytime heating is going to add to an already moist and unstable airmass and we could see the threat for some thunderstorms this afternoon. These will be capable of producing very heavy snowfall rates. It will also provide convective lift that can create graupel. If lightning and wind don't shut down the lifts this afternoon, graupel could make the skiing good quickly.
Snow continues into this evening. Flow turns more NW tonight into Saturday morning and showers will continue, particularly in the Cottonwoods. Saturday should be a very good day. No change to the forecast from yesterday. I think 1-2" of liquid at 10:1 ratios will make for 10-20" of snow. We could see a bit better ratios particularly at the tail end of the storm in the Cottonwoods so wouldn't be shocked if we bettered that top end -- but it's harder to bet big this late in the season.
We should clear out later on Saturday with a nice, sunny day on Sunday.
Extended Forecast
Next week looks more tranquil and much warmer with high pressure in control. We could be brushed by a system at the end of the month.
