Scattered Snow Showers Today, Snow Tomorrow

Summary

Another big storm wrapped with another one incoming. Snow showers today with heavier snow developing tonight into Friday along with cold temperatures. Snow showers continue into the weekend. More chances for snow next week.

Short Term Forecast

I have sporadic service this morning so this will be a quicker update than usual. Our storm wrapped up with very good totals over the past 48 hours. 24-hour amounts ranged from 5" up to 18" with generally 9-18" in the Central Wasatch. Storm totals in the 10-25" range which is generally at or above the 10-20" forecast. Totals since Sunday now 25-40".

Additional snow showers today as some moisture combines with daytime heating. Don't expect big accumulation during the day, but can't rule out a few quick inches in heavier showers.

The next storm moves in late tonight with snow continuing through Friday and perhaps lingering into Saturday. In general, we've seen models increase totals for this storm. Now seeing liquid amounts of 0.5" or greater with particularly high totals for places like LCC favored in a NW flow. You can see the Upper LCC HRRR bringing up to 1.75" of liquid through Saturday morning:

The NBM also showing areas with over an inch of liquid:

This system is very cold, especially for late March with 700mb temps down to or below -15C. That means ratios will be good and we could easily see 15:1 or greater. Snow totals by Saturday morning, therefore could be 8-16" with 20" or more possible if the LCC orographic machine really turns on. This may be the cherry on top.

Another, weaker wave may move through late Saturday night and Sunday morning with several additional inches possible. Cold temps remain.

Extended Forecast

Next week we should have a break Monday and Tuesday but models are in good agreement now on a low dropping down into California then ejecting east. This might miss us a bit west and south, but we should still see chances for snow Wednesday and Thursday of next week but the totals may be somewhat modest. We will continue to watch. Beyond that, the GFS keeps storms coming into early April. Who knows? But I don't see a definitive end in sight.
