Ski News - Week In Review (March 26, 2017)

New Copper Mountain Lift: Copper Mountain announced a new chairlift for next ski season. The Colorado resort plans to replace the Kokomo Lift serving Copper’s beginner terrain with a high-speed quad. The new lift will extend 215 feet downhill from the existing lift to allow easier access from Copper’s West Village.

Trumps in Aspen: According to CNN, President Donald Trump’s three eldest children and their families took a spring-break ski trip to Aspen, Colorado. The trip created some controversy related to the taxpayer-funded costs of Secret Service protection. 

Utah DUI Law: Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill lowering Utah’s DUI level from .08 to .05, the lowest in the nation. According to an Associated Press report, Ski Utah, the trade group of the state’s ski resorts, had opposed the bill. "With already some quirky laws and some perceptions, misperceptions nationally that maybe you can't even get a drink in Utah, this just puts you one step backward," Ski Utah spokesman Paul Marshall said in the AP report.

Breckenridge Big Mountain Competition: Colorado’s Breckenridge Resort hosted about 200 boys and girls, ages 10-18, for the GoPro Big Mountain Challenge on Peak 6, March 18-19. The competitors skied and boarded lines through the cliff bands in the Six Senses area.

Jackson Hole Rendezvous: Jackson Hole held its fourth-annual spring music festival in the town of Jackson, Wyoming, and at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, March 17-19. In addition to live music on a stage under the ski area’s famous Aerial Tram, the Zac Brown Band headlined the festival with a concert at the resort.

Purgatory Cardboard Derby: Purgatory Resort in southwest Colorado hosted its second-annual McDonald’s Cardboard Derby on Saturday, March 18. Riding in a tribute to Star Wars, the Schill Family took home the grand prize of a stay and ski package at the resort.

Jiminy Peak Spring Fling: A cardboard derby was also part of the spring festival over St. Patrick’s Day Weekend at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Massachusetts. Children’s races, a bikini slalom and pond skim were also weekend highlights. Jiminy Peak plans to be open for skiing and riding through April 16.
