Endless winter continues out West

Summary

It's been an incredible March and an incredible season for much of the Western U.S. with frequent storms and cold temperatures. An active pattern will continue through the final few days of the month and into early April as well, so don't put your skis away just yet. The Midwest and Northeast will see two rounds of snow early this week followed by a mix of rain and snow late in the week.

Short Term Forecast

Recent Snow Totals Across the West:

The final weekend of March was deep across a large portion of the West, especially in the Rockies as well as the Oregon Cascades. Five-day snow totals as of Sunday morning included 60" at Solitude (UT), 54" at Alta (UT), 53" at Grand Targhee (WY), 42" at Timberline (OR), 34" at Arizona Snowbowl (AZ), 33" at Snowmass (CO), and 32" at Red Lodge (MT).

Forecast for Mon, Mar 27 – Tue, Mar 28:

A weak disturbance will move across the Rockies on Monday with light snow showers expected from Alberta to Colorado. A strong storm will reach the West Coast on Tuesday with heavy snow developing in California and Oregon.

A storm will also move across the Northeast on Monday-Monday night with snow favoring New York, while parts of New England will also see light snow.

Forecast for Wed, Mar 29 – Thu, Mar 30:

A storm will continue to impact the West with heavy snow across the Sierra Nevada Range including Tahoe early on Wednesday before the action shifts into the Rockies late Wednesday and into Thursday. A storm will also move across the Midwest and Northeast with light snow expected for most areas.

Forecast for Fri, Mar 31 – Sat, Apr 1:

Get ready for an active weekend as another storm impacts the West. There are still some questions regarding the storm track, but for now, British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest look most favored for heavy snow, while the Northern and Central Rockies should also pick up some decent snowfall.

Back-to-back storms will move across the Midwest and Northeast during this period, but the pattern looks a bit messy with a mix of rain and snow expected for most areas.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun, Apr 2 – Thu, Apr 6:

Winter will continue out West into early April with temperatures remaining colder than average. An active storm track is also expected, likely favoring the Northwest and the Northern/Central Rockies though areas further south could also see some action. The East will remain active as well with storms likely featuring a mix of rain and snow across the Northeast with mostly rain for the Mid-Atlantic.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (March 29).
