An active pattern will continue this week with frequent storms bringing heavy snow to the Cascades and Northern Rockies. A similar pattern may continue into next week as well. Sustained cold will reach the East after New Year's with increasing snowfall potential over the next 1-2 weeks.

This week will start with light rain and very light snow to the north. The storm system on Tuesday will track north on Wednesday and funnel cold air into the Eastern US. Cold air with wrap-around moisture will bring light to moderate lake effect snow to the western and northern Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday through the remainder of the week. More widespread snow is possible after Sunday, January 5.
