Thoughts on Upcoming Season

Summary

Hard to wrap my head around the season being around the corner when it still feels like summer around here. As I'm sure you are aware, it is a weak La Niña season which slightly tilts our odds towards less than average snowfall, though that is not the entire story.

Short Term Forecast

As one would expect the winter forecast from NOAA favors a drier and warmer than average winter.

Weak La Niña years don't have the same strong dry signal as a full blown La Niña.

Many of the past La Niña winters that saw near average to above average snowfall were during weak events. In fact, 2020-'21 season was also a weak La Niña year and it was pretty darn good, with Snowbowl recording 225" of snow, above the 204" average. Yes, we will likely receive less storm chances, but it does not mean we can't have large events, likely less of them.

Extended Forecast

Following our latest spell of very warm November weather, temperatures cool off through the week of 11/15. Tuesday begins our cool down with gradually cooler weather into the weekend. Hopefully this will assist in snowmaking operations.

Models are hinting at possible storm chances Thanksgiving week.

I'm looking forward to bringing you several blogs a week here on OpenSnow and hopefully we will have much to talk about.

Think Snow!
