Final Post of the 2023-2024 Season

Summary

And what a phenomenal season it was. Let's do a quick recap on the winter and take a quick look at the seasonal forecast for this summer. For the last time this season..... let's get into it!

Short Term Forecast

Snowmelt has begun in earnest over the past week. You can really see it on the OpenSnow snowpack trend graph:

The final April storm set us up well and almost kicked the snowpack into record territory. Either way, that was the best April snowstorm I have experienced in Idaho. Tamarack and Brundage did well this season but did not fair nearly as well as Bogus.

The precipitation anomaly map for the last 180 days over Idaho is really interesting:

The entire Snake River plain did incredibly well with the Owyhees, Boise Mountains, and the southeastern part of the state getting hammered most of the winter. The downside is that the central and northern mountains did not fair so well.

Temperatures were warmer than average across most of the state. You can see that in the temperature anomaly map below for the past 120 days:

Overall not a bad winter. I would give the winter a letter grade of A for Bogus, a B- for Tamarack/Brundage, and a C for Soldier/Sun Valley.

Extended Forecast

The ocean temperatures are cooling in the ENSO regions:

The CPC is predicting ENSO neutral conditions through most of the summer with a possible La Nina by this fall:

Seasonal models are all over the place with the Euro predicting very warm temperatures across the country this summer and the CVSV2 predicting cooler temperatures across California and the plains states:

Either way, I hope you have a great spring and summer. I will post every now and then as interesting things come up. Be sure to make liberal use of our site for planning those summer excursions, whether hiking, biking, camping, etc.

Thanks for following along this season, and I hope my forecasts enabled you to catch a few more powder days than you normally would. Please send any feedback that you may have to [email protected].

Keep dreaming about powder!
