Clearing Thursday, Snow Returns Sat Night - Monday...

Summary

Mostly dry through Saturday. A weak system will bring scattered snow showers Saturday night into Sunday, with steadier snow Sunday night into Monday. We could see another weak system Tuesday. The models are split on whether we go into a drier pattern starting Tuesday, or see another system later next week before going into a drier pattern.

Update

As of early Thursday morning, we have chain controls in place over the top of Donner Pass from Kingvale (exit 170) to Donner Lake (exit 180).

Thursday - Saturday:

The roads are becoming just wet Thursday morning with chain controls expected to drop during the morning hours.

We could see a few scattered snow showers each afternoon-evening but mostly a drier pattern with any daytime snow showers likely just bringing wet roads. Watch for possible slick spots at night after the sun sets.

Saturday Night - Monday System:

Saturday night through Monday a weak system moves through. We could see scattered snow showers Saturday night with snow levels dropping below 6000 ft. Watch for any heavier showers to possibly pop up and coat the road over Donner Pass, but overall only expecting a dusting to an inch of snow at best.

Scattered snow showers on Sunday but with the daytime heating the roads will likely just be wet.

Sunday night into Monday we could see several inches of snowfall on the mountains and over Donner Pass. We should see chain controls set up over Donner Pass Sunday evening with snow levels dropping to 3000 ft. by early Monday morning. That could extend chain controls below Blue Canyon and through Truckee overnight.

Be prepared for snow, slower travel, and chain controls into Monday morning, and possibly later into the day. The snow is expected to become more showery but it will be cold with highs only in the 20s. So it could take longer for the snow to melt off the road over Donner Pass on Monday.

The snow showers are expected to diminish by Monday night but watch for slick spots.

Long-Range:

The latest model runs show another weak system for Tuesday with scattered snow showers. Not expected any daytime impacts. Watch for slick spots and possible chain controls over the pass on both Monday and Tuesday nights.

We could see a break Wednesday with another system possible for Thursday. We'll continue to watch the trends with that storm.

The weekend of the 8th-9th into the week of the 10th we are expecting a drier pattern. We'll let you know if that changes.
