Snowy weekend for Idaho - 12"-18" by Sunday

Summary

Well, Heidi Ho, here we go for a 3-day *pow* fest in Idaho, starting Friday morning with 5" of new at Lookout and Silver, 2" at Schweitzer as a storm system flows down from Canada and will continue through Saturday night. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect Fri-Sat with blustery winds. N. Idaho and Brundage will get 5" Friday, Pomerelle, Magic, Pebble and Kelly 8-10". More by Sunday AM.

Short Term Forecast

Pocatello skiers enjoy fresh *pow* at Pebble Creek Ski Area. Pebble is in the bull's eye for this particular storm event Friday-Sunday with a potential for 18-24" to fall by Sunday morning. It's rare to see that much snow forecast for Pebble. Similar amounts are forecast at Pomerelle, Magic and Kelly Canyon. (photo courtesy Visit Pocatello).

Be aware that windy conditions are associated with the storm system on Friday and Saturday with 25-35 mph winds forecast, and gusts into the 40 mph range. The areas with the most snow forecast (Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain in the north, Pomerelle and Pebble Creek in the south) are also supposed to get the big winds. It will feel like blizzard conditions, most likely. Bundle up! Hopefully the wind speeds stay below levels where lifts are forced to be closed.

An Arctic cold front will pass through Idaho on Friday night, dropping temperatures into the single digits by Sunday. A second wave of storms will deliver more snow Friday night through Saturday night.

With a Northwest-to-Southeast flow to the storm system, Central Idaho and SW Idaho ski areas are not expected to get as much snow out of this particular system. Bogus Basin will get 1-3" each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so that could pile up to 9" by Sunday on the upside of the forecast. Tamarack is forecast to get similar amounts, depending on how far south the system hits. Brundage could have 10" of new by Sunday AM.

With the Northwest flow, Sun Valley is forecast to get just a dusting on Saturday.

Daytime temperatures will drop statewide with the Arctic cold front by Sunday. Single digits are forecast as daytime highs from Schweitzer to Pebble Creek.

Extended Forecast

There will be a break in the action by Sunday, and some ski areas will clear off for some chilly sunny weather by Sunday afternoon.

Things dry out Monday-Wednesday statewide, and then there's a chance of more snow coming later in the week.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Monday, Jan. 30.
