Snow for First Chair Wednesday

Summary

Rain and snow arrive on Tuesday into Wednesday morning, offering some turns in fresh snow for the Lake Superior region on Wednesday. Rain, with a little bit of wet snow, is possible late Wednesday into Thursday before another chance of rain and snow arrives for Friday into Saturday.

Short Term Forecast

Tuesday - Wednesday:

The forecast remains on track, with some fresh snow expected for first chair for the Lake Superior region, particularly for resorts on the north shore. Snow quality looks to start out drier/lighter Tuesday night before turning wet/thick by Wednesday morning.

Lutsen and Loch Lomond still have the best chance (50/50) of having a few turns of powdery snow Wednesday morning before temperatures warm above freezing and the chance of some light rain showers or drizzle arrive.

For resorts such as Spirit, Giants Ridge, and those in the UP, it looks like the temperatures and chance of light rain or drizzle could impact the snow quality before the lifts spin. Regardless, Wednesday should offer some softer turns in fresh snow for the Lake Superior region with the quality ranging from mainly medium-density to wetter/thicker snow.

The deepest snow will be for resorts on the north shore of Lake Superior (Giants Ridge, Lutsen, Spirit, Mt Baldy, Mont du Lac) where 3-8" is expected for the most part. There is some upside for more at Lutsen and Loch Lomond as they could see a period of lake-enhanced snow Tuesday night, but as of now, the most prolonged period of enhanced snow appears to be closer to Silver Bay, MN. Over in the UP, a dusting to 3" is expected for most resorts followed by some light rain or drizzle on Wednesday.

For the Twin Cities, central Wisconsin, and lower Michigan this will mainly be a rain event with a few flakes mixing in at times. Trollhaugen, Wild Mtn, Granite Peak, a few of the Traverse City resorts, and Searchmont could be far enough north to see some wet snow but nothing significant is expected.

Thursday - Saturday:

Late Wednesday, another system moves into the southern half of the Midwest, bringing rain and maybe some wet snow. There could even be a few rumbles of thunder in the south half of Wisconsin and Lower Michigan. I am a little concerned about how much rain falls for the Detroit, Michigan resorts as the few that are still open are monitoring things on a day-by-day basis. The same is being done at locations like Alpine Valley (WI) with them hoping to spin the lifts this upcoming weekend. Any rain likely hurts the odds of us seeing more time on the slopes.

Some of the models, including the HRRR (a high resolution model), want to bring some wet snow to the Twin Cities Wednesday night, which could offer a few inches of wet/thick snow for Thursday's first chair.

On the heels of the system from Wednesday into Thursday comes another round expected Friday into Saturday, which at this time looks to bring some fresh snow to portions of Wisconsin and Lower Michigan. The models are still mixed on where exactly the snow flys, but here is a look at where the ECMWF and GFS ensembles have the best odds of seeing snow:
