A Long Journey

Summary

Cold air to start the week will warm later this week. No snow in the forecast until around Thanksgiving when the pattern looks to change.

Short Term Forecast

It's cold out there this morning with temperatures in the 20s in the lower valleys, teens in the higher valleys, and single digits in the mountains. Silver Lake a Brighton was 2F when I checked earlier. 4F at Alta-Collins gauge. Many similarly cold temps across the state. Everybody's favorite cold spot, Peter Sinks, has dropped down to -18F so far this morning.... Brrrr! It is, however, good news for local ski resorts with snow-making abilities as they are able to blow snow around the clock to prepare for expected opening dates.

The story for this week is dry weather with warming temperatures as high pressure takes control. That will continue thru the upcoming weekend. Really not much to talk about until the extended forecast...

Extended Forecast

We are patiently waiting for this pattern change to arrive.  Earlier it looked like the pattern could shift as early as November 18-19, but, as is often the case, it seems the ridge is going to be a bit harder to displace than models originally thought.  Currently, it seems as if the most likely scenario is for our first chance for a storm to arrive just after Thanksgiving on November 23.  This is still 11 days out so confidence is low.  The good news is that models continue to show active weather and open storm door possibilities for the last week of November.  You can see the pattern changing from high pressure ridging to low pressure troughing in the below animation -- keep your eye on the date in the top-center of the image:

So while we continue to have some good news and reasons for hope, we have a long journey to get there. The next 10 days are going to require a lot of patience...  But we can do it!
