Friday Dump Fest

Summary

Heavy snow continues today in a northwest flow with truly impressive storm totals. A break late today through Saturday. Clouds and chances for light showers by Sunday with a potent storm for northern Utah Sunday night through at least Tuesday. Significant snowfall is once again likely. A drier pattern is possible late next week.

Short Term Forecast

An absolutely huge morning of snow in Northern Utah. Snow showers yesterday left a few inches, but the heavy stuff arrived once again overnight and it has absolutely dumped. 16-20" so far in the Cottonwood Canyons.

16" at Snowbasin!

14" at Park City

8" reported at PowMow, 8" at Deer Valley, 11" at Sundance. 6" at Eagle Point/Brian Head.

I can't believe how many mornings I've woken up this year and looked at webcams of absolute dumpage. The storm totals are now ranging from 18-35" since Wednesday PM. Alta has, for the first time ever, reached 800" of snow before the end of their season.

It is also now the snowiest month EVER in the history of the Alta-Collins snow plot which dates back to 1980.

I am truly out of words to describe what is going on. We are shattering records left and right. And, it is not going to stop snowing.

Snow continues this morning into early afternoon with another 6-12" in favored areas like the Cottonwoods. Elsewhere, 4-8" of additional snow is possible. If you can get to the mountain today, conditions are going to be epic... I'm talking all-time levels of deep.

We are going to have a break late today through the day on Saturday. Hopefully we will get some good terrain openings and not too much sun, which is quick to ruin snow this time of year.

The next storm starts approaching on Sunday. We could see some snow showers way up north as early as Sunday, but the main part of the storm should sag into the area Sunday night into early Monday. This system has plenty of moisture and is somewhat stalling over northern Utah. Heavy snow is likely through Monday into Tuesday. The GFS shows another 2.5" of liquid is possible in Upper LCC by midweek:

This is quite a lot of liquid, but it's backed up by the GEFS ensembles which also show a mean of 2+" of liquid:

Even the WPC is showing over 2" for this period:

All this is leading to high confidence that we will get clobbered. Again. Cold temperatures will also allow for high snow ratios, so we should really pile the snow up. My early guess is 1-2" of liquid for 1-2+ feet of snow. The Cottonwoods, which again look particularly favored, could get significantly more if things come together right.

Another foot of snow today could bring Alta to 812" on the season by tonight. We could feasibly get close to 850" by the middle of the upcoming week. Unreal.

Extended Forecast

It does look like we are going to see a break in the snow late next week into next weekend. It's hard to say just how long this break will last, but it should be the warmest, driest weather we've seen in a while. Only another 2-5 feet of snow to go before we get there. ;-)
