Winter Making a Comeback

Summary

Winter returns this week with much colder weather. We have a chance for accumulating snowfall later this week on Wednesday into Thursday. Good chance it's the last snow of the season. Spring weather returns next week...

Short Term Forecast

Welcome to the first day of May! Hard to believe but we have 2 resorts still open here on the 1st day of May. Mountain High is closed after today though, so it will just be Mt. Baldy open through the coming days of May. They are closed Monday's at least as of now.

After our summer like temps and weather last week Winter is most certainly making a comeback this week.

Check out the forecast for Mt. Baldy over the next 5 days!

Highs in the 30's by Tuesday and continuing in the 30's through Friday! That's very cold for this time of year. Normally all of the ski areas would be closed but after this exceptional year we have one still going for it to last as long into May as possible.

You'll also notice that the chance of snow is there for especially Wednesday night into Thursday. Yes.. that is right. May snowfall and I'm actually pretty confident it will happen.

Winds are will be gusting up to 30 - 40 PH out of the Southwest over the next few days. We do have a chance to see snow showers and flurries later tonight into Tuesday but accumulations will hold off until Wednesday.

Below, you can see the WPC model forecast for precip through Friday morning. There's close to 0.90 inches on that model fo us, with even 8:1 ratios that's over 7 inches of snow possible. It's going to be tough to get that especially with the warm ground and May sun angle, but it's possible.

You can see both Ensemble Means show precip with the Euro showing over double the GFS Ensemble mean.

My expectation is for 3 - 5 inches of snowfall by Friday morning with most of that falling Wednesday night into Thursday. Get ready for some free snow on Thursday with cold air!

Extended Forecast

If you want Spring weather to return we're in luck, as Winter's return will likely be fairly short lived. We'll stay cool through the weekend of May 6th and 7th but by next week we'll start warming back up into the 40's and should reach 50 degrees early next week.

You can see that the GFS Ensemble Mean model shows not necessarily a positive height anomaly but also doesn't have a trough over our region all of next week.

This means we're likely to see drier weather but not hot or above average temps. The snowfall this week will very likely be the last one of the season for us.

I'll likely post one more time this season after this snowfall and discuss a bit of a seasonal recap and tally up the snowfall totals. They are quite impressive especially compared to the last couple years.

Enjoy the fresh snow this week at Mt. Baldy and the Spring conditions thereafter.

Till the next one... Mike out.
