Multiple snowy days this week at Steamboat

Summary

Snow will fall on Monday into Tuesday morning, again Tuesday night into Wednesday, and yet again from Thursday into Friday. Each system should bring at least a few inches, with soft conditions throughout the week.

Short Term Forecast

Sunday was sunny and cold, then on Sunday night clouds returned and light snow began to fall.

Now on Monday early morning, the summit snow stake shows 1 inch of accumulation, and snow is falling lightly. During Monday morning, expect snow showers with just light accumulations due to an unfavorable southwest wind, then during Monday afternoon and Monday night, the wind direction will switch to blow from the west-northwest and northwest which will be more favorable for snow. The best turns could be on Monday’s last chair or Tuesday morning’s first chair with a total of 3-6 inches.

On Tuesday, snow showers should end in the morning with dry weather through most of the day.

On Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, another batch of moisture will move in, and while most models show just light snow, past situations when we had cold air at the surface, incoming moisture, and the jet stream nearby have led to more snow than expected. So keep your eye out for potential soft conditions on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday night through Thursday morning should be dry.

Then another storm will bring snow from Thursday into Friday with a possibility for 4-8 inches and the softest turns on Friday.

Extended Forecast

The weekend of December 19-20 should be mostly dry though nearby storm energy could produce some flakes.

During the week of Christmas, there will be storminess across the western US, but unfortunately, it looks like luck will not be on our side and that a lot of this storminess will miss Colorado. Our best chance for snow will be around Wednesday, December 23rd. Then we’ll see dry conditions between about December 24-28, with more snow possible as we get closer to the new year.
