Snow and potential powder on Saturday and early Sunday at Steamboat

Summary

Expect cloudy skies on Thursday and Friday with 3-7 inches of snow from Friday night to Saturday night.

Short Term Forecast

On Wednesday we saw sunshine for most of the day, then a layer of clouds moved in on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night and there were a few unexpected snowflakes that fell, though I could see no accumulation on the summit snow stake cam.

For Thursday and Friday, look for mostly cloudy and warming weather as moisture and warmth push into Colorado via the southwest flow ahead of a large storm over California. High temperatures on both days should be in the 30s.

The next storm will bring snow from late Friday night through Saturday night and we should see 3-7 inches with soft turns on Saturday and maybe soft leftovers on Sunday morning. The trick to this storm will be on Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening when we'll have a favorable wind direction from the west and west-northwest along with lingering moisture and storm energy. Sometimes these conditions combine to create more snow than is in the forecast, so watch out on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning for a chance of softer and/or deeper snow.

Extended Forecast

Following the storm on Saturday, we should see dry weather on Sunday and Monday.

Then a complex series of storms, with multiple pieces of energy, should bring a chance for snow from Tuesday night, February 2 all the way through Sunday, February 7. We could see snow during many or all of these days, and we’ll likely experience very cold temperatures for at least a few of these days. I do not yet know which of these days, if any, will offer the deepest snow and possible powder, and of course I will keep you posted as we gain more clarity in the forecast.

Thanks for reading and check back each morning for daily updates!
