West is best this week

Summary

Storms will keep plowing through the west through the end of January, with the deepest snow in the Pacific Northwest. The storm track could change a bit as we head into early February, so if you’re looking for western pow, don’t delay!

Short Term Forecast

As a snow forecaster, what makes me happy is consistent storms in the forecast. We had that last week, and we have that this week. Storms don’t need to be big as long as they happen every few days. The best ski conditions sometimes occur not with the headline-grabbing storms but with consistent, smaller snowfalls.

Early this week, from Monday through Wednesday, January 22-24, a storm will push through the Pacific Northwest while another storm exits Colorado and brings snow to the Upper Midwest. Unfortunately, this storm track also means that warmer air will bring rain to most of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Tuesday.

Later this week, the next storm will hit the west. Once again the Pacific Northwest will get into the action, and we’ll also see powder in Tahoe, Utah, and Colorado.

Looking ahead to the weekend of January 27-28, the next storm will bring snow to the Pacific Northwest while the storm track will continue to favor the Upper Midwest. Again with this storm track, the east coast will likely get a day of rain on Sunday.

Summing up the 8-day snowfall from January 22-30, you can see that the west coast and the central Rockies will be favored with two storms also bringing snow to the Upper Midwest.

Extended Forecast

During the final day of January and into early February, a storm should bring snow to most of the Rockies, and the general of storminess should shift east just a bit and focus less on the west coast and more on the Rockies. You can see this shift toward stormier weather over the Rockies in the map below, which shows the temperature forecast compared to the average temperature for this time of year.

It was a slow start to the season for most of the west, but we are starting to claw our way back into great ski conditions. And for the Pacific Northwest, the season started strong and continues to be full of pow. I hope you are enjoying the snow wherever you are!
