Early week snow for the Sierra and Rockies
Summary
A fast-moving storm will bring a round of snow from Tahoe to the Central Rockies on Monday and Tuesday. A wet pattern will then take hold across the Northwest over the second half of the week with high snow levels initially giving way to lower snow levels by the weekend. The higher elevations of New England could also see their first flakes of the season this week.
Short Term Forecast
Quick round of snow for Tahoe, Wasatch, and Colorado
A storm system centered over Northern California early on Monday morning will quickly move across the Great Basin and Central Rockies over the next couple of days.
While not a big storm compared to what we saw last week, up to several inches of snow will be possible for ski areas from Tahoe to Utah to Colorado as the early season snowpack continues to build.
Forecast for Mon 10/18 – Tue 10/19
Snow will linger across the Sierra early Monday morning while the Rockies will see most of their action from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. Areas along and east of the Continental Divide in Southern Wyoming, including the Wind River Range and Snowy Range, will see the heaviest snow totals from this storm.
A cool and wet system will also impact New England on Monday and Tuesday and the higher peaks of the Whites and Adirondacks could potentially see some light snow at times. Over the far north, the mountain ranges of Southeast Alaska will continue to get pounded by early-season storms.
Forecast for Wed 10/20 – Thu 10/21
Back-to-back storms will impact the Northwest on Wednesday and Thursday but warmer air will also be involved with these storms, resulting in high snow levels. Rain and high elevation snow from this pattern can be expected across the Cascades, Sierra, British Columbia, Northern Idaho, and Northwest Montana. Southeast Alaska will continue to pick up deep totals through the middle of the week.
Forecast for Fri 10/22 – Sat 10/23
Storms will continue to batter the Northwest on Friday and Saturday but colder air arriving will result in falling snow levels, especially on Saturday. The storm on Saturday should also start to push further inland over the Northern U.S. Rockies by late in the day. The higher peaks of New England could also see some light snow showers early on Friday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Sun 10/24 – Thu 10/28
This period is looking very active across the West with multiple storms expected along with colder temperatures. As a result, significant snowfall is possible for the Pacific Northwest, Tahoe, British Columbia, and the Northern and Central U.S. Rockies.
Cooler temperatures are expected across the East as well with light snow possible at times over the higher elevations of New England.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (10/20).
