Deep storm cycle underway for the Northwest
Summary
A powerful storm will bring heavy snow to the Northwest and Western Canada on Monday and Tuesday with deep totals adding up. This will be a nice late-season treat before many ski areas shut down for the season this weekend. A dry and sunny pattern will take hold from Wednesday through Friday, then a colder and more active pattern will return this weekend & next week across the West.
Short Term Forecast
April powder days ahead for the Northwest
An impressive late-season storm cycle began over the weekend across the Northwest and heavy snow will continue on Monday and Tuesday with coverage spreading southward and eastward.
British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho will see the deepest snow totals (double digits totals likely) from this cycle with moderate snow extending into the Central Rockies. The Cascades and BC Coast Range will be the hardest hit with storm total snowfall being measured in feet.
Forecast for Mon 4/4 – Tue 4/5:
Heavy snow will fall across the Northwest on Monday and Tuesday with moderate to locally heavy snow extending into Wyoming on Monday night and Utah and Colorado on Tuesday. Two storms will also impact the Upper Midwest with a mix of rain and snow expected.
Forecast for Wed 4/6 – Thu 4/7:
High pressure will build over the West with a return to spring-like conditions by Thursday for most areas. However, a storm will track further north and bring heavy snow to Southeast Alaska and Northwest BC. The Upper Midwest will also see a stronger storm with a mix of rain and snow.
Forecast for Fri 4/8 – Sat 4/9:
High pressure will gradually weaken across the West late in the week as the next storm begins to impact the Northwest, including BC and Washington, on Friday and Saturday. The East will also see a cool and wet storm during this period with a little bit of high elevation snow possible across parts of the Appalachians and New England on Saturday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Sun 4/10 – Thu 4/14:
The West will turn colder and more active next week as a slow-moving storm or series of storms could bring multiple rounds of snowfall to the Cascades, Sierra, and Rockies. Although many ski resorts will close for the season on April 10th, spring powder days will be possible for areas that remain open next week.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (4/6).
