Late season action for the East

Summary

The East was just hit by a late season Nor'easter with deep totals adding up across portions of the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Strong storms have continued to impact the Sierra as well as the PNW with snow picking up across the Rockies mid-week. An unsettled pattern with snow showers will continue out West through next week while the East could potentially see another storm next week.

Short Term Forecast

Eastern ski resorts score the goods:

A strong storm impacted the Mid-Atlantic and New England on Tuesday with initial snow reports of 30+ inches reported by our Eastern forecasters across parts of New York and Lower New England as of Tuesday PM. Snow stake cams were also starting to look deep as of Tuesday PM with deep totals extending into Vermont. Check out the Okemo snow stake cam from early Tuesday evening:

Forecast for Wed, Mar 15 – Thu, Mar 16:

Lingering snow across the Sierra will taper off on Wednesday morning as the main action shifts into the Rockies with heavy snow expected from Idaho to Colorado. Snow will taper off across the Northern Rockies on Thursday but will linger across Colorado and New Mexico.

Snow will also linger across New England on Wednesday morning before tapering off later in the day with a break expected on Thursday. The Midwest will turn active by Thursday afternoon as a storm arrives with snow developing across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Forecast for Fri, Mar 17 – Sat, Mar 18:

Snow will linger across Southern Colorado and New Mexico into early Friday, then the pattern turns uncertain out West. Most models are projecting a weak storm to make landfall somewhere in the West, but confidence is low on whether it will happen in the Northwest or further south in California.

A strong storm will impact the Midwest during this period with deep totals expected across the Northern Great Lakes, especially around the UP of Michigan. The storm will also impact the East but snow will change to rain for most of this region, and then back to snow later Saturday as colder air returns.

Forecast for Sun, Mar 19 – Mon, Mar 20:

An unsettled pattern is expected across the West during this period with multiple weaker storms bringing snow showers to much of the area, though confidence is low regarding favored storm tracks. The Northeast will see light to moderate snow showers as well as a couple of weak disturbances arrive behind Saturday's storm.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Mar 21 – Sat, Mar 25:

An active pattern will continue across the West during this period with the storm track favoring the Sierra and the Central U.S. Rockies. Temperatures are also expected to be colder than average for late March. A storm is also possible in the East around the 21st-22nd with snow potential for both the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (March 17).
