Northern U.S. & Canada Showers, West Turns Active Next Week

Summary

Weak storms will impact northern portions of the Northern U.S. and Canada on Wed-Thu, bringing light snow to the Northern Rockies and Alaska. A strong storm will begin to impact the Northwest over the weekend, bringing rain to most areas initially but with a changeover to snow at ski resorts as colder air arrives. Colder air and snow will reach the U.S. Rockies next week.

Short Term Forecast

5-Day Snow Forecast:

From Wednesday through Sunday, there will be two focus areas. First, the Northern U.S. Rockies will see a quick round of snow early on Thursday. Over the weekend, a strong storm will impact the Northwest with rain eventually changing to snow at ski resort elevations. BC and Northern Washington will see the deepest snow totals through Sunday.

10-Day Snow Forecast:

Snow levels will drop to lower elevations across the Northwest early next week, and snow and cold air will also reach the Western U.S.

Ten-day snow forecasts should never be taken too literally (too much uncertainty in the details that far out), but our 10-Day Powder Finder Map paints a good picture that snowy conditions are likely across mountainous regions of the West next week.

Forecast for Wed (Oct 23) to Thu (Oct 24):

A fast-moving storm will bring light snow to the Northern Rockies, and eventually rain to the Upper Midwest as it tracks eastward. A minor disturbance will also bring a few light showers to Northern New England. Light to moderate snow will fall across Alaska and Northern BC.

Forecast for Fri (Oct 25) to Sat (Oct 26):

Heavy rain and snow will develop across the Northwest as a strong storm arrives. Snow levels will gradually lower over time from north to south, but will stay above most ski resort summits in Washington and Oregon through Saturday.

Another weak storm will bring light showers to Northern New England, including a changeover to light snow across the higher terrain as colder air arrives.

Forecast for Sun (Oct 27) to Mon (Oct 28):

The storm track will deepen southward into the Western U.S. and colder air will also arrive with rain changing to snow at most ski resorts. The Northwest and the Northern/Central Rockies will be favored for the heaviest/most widespread snowfall, but Tahoe and the Northern Sierra should also pick up some snow.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue (Oct 29) to Sat (Nov 2):

The storm track will favor the Northwest and the Rockies with below-average temperatures expected west of the Continental Divide. The Central and Eastern U.S. will remain warmer than average, with drier conditions for the East and wetter conditions for the Midwest.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (October 25).
