Summary

Big snow last night. More snow develops tonight with a productive northwest flow and significant accumulations. A break for the weekend before another significant storm is possible early next week. Then, maybe, just maybe a more extended break.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday's southerly flow really picked up in the evening and overnight and was quite productive. Yesterday evening I had to do a special update post because the trends yesterday were so good that I knew my forecast was too low. Even so, the first half of the system last night still beat my expectations dropping anywhere from 6 to 17 inches of snow. Most areas were in the 6-12" range, but LCC and BCC ranged from 12-17". Alta-Collins picked up 0.99" of liquid. Another healthy total.

We are in somewhat of a break this morning but snow showers will pick up again this afternoon with the flow turning northwest. We will then see another wave move through to enhance showers tonight and we expect heavy snow with another 8-16". In the Cottonwoods, particularly LCC, totals could be even higher with the favored NW flow. The latest HRRR goes big:

Another 20" or so just tonight and tomorrow morning. The NBM, which I shared yesterday, is also much more aggressive in its totals:

Another 1.5" or more of additional liquid. We have plenty of cold air as well now so ratios should be quite good. Overall, I think another 1-2 FEET in the Cottonwoods is a good bet. Today and tomorrow are going to feature fantastic powder -- with very good terrain opening powder on Saturday!

Our break will be this weekend but clouds and moisture already start to move into far northern Utah on Sunday. The main storm should move through in the Monday through Wednesday timeframe and we could see a period of heavy snow in northern Utah mountains with a productive NW flow behind the system. Again, we could be looking at another 1-2 FEET of snow early next week if things come together just right. We will worry about that more after we get through the current storm.

Extended Forecast

Some very good news if you're ready for this all to end. Personally, I'm caught in two minds. On one hand, I want to shatter every record we have and continue to ski powder until the end of eternity. On the other hand, I concede that some nice warm days to do outdoor activities with my son would be welcome. We also need to start melting off the enormous snowpack sooner rather than later. The longer it stays, the higher our chances at major flooding. On that note, it does look like late next week into the following weekend we could have warmer temperatures and mostly dry weather. Here is the EPS heights for April 11th:

A real, live ridge over the western US. Wow! We shall see if it comes to fruition.

P.S. Every year I try to raise money for the Utah Avalanche Center by selling some fun t-shirt designs. We've raised close to $10,000 over the past few years. Yesterday, I gave praise to the whale with a new "All Hail the Whale" design featuring Mt Superior. I was rather proud of my art.

All Hail the Whale t-shirts can be purchased HERE

Also, it's officially Utah's deepest ever snowpack so I have a "Record Season" shirt to commemorate the occasion available HERE.

And finally, the old classic "Ski Colorado" shirt is still available:
