Colorado Daily Snow

Heads up, there may be fresher snow! Read the latest Colorado Daily Snow

Everything I said in yesterday's post is about on track, with just a few minor tweaks.

Obamney is going to be a great storm for most mountains, with the potential for up to 30 inches in the southern San Juans and a healthy 6-12 inches for most other locations.

The heaviest snow will fall Friday night in the San Juans and from about 2am to 10am Saturday morning for the rest of the state. This snow will be a bit on the thicker side with warmer temperatures. I fully expect whiteout conditions as this band of snow moves across the state, especially in the San Juans. We're talking 1-2 inches per hour and maybe a lightning strike or two.

A second round of heavier (fluffier, colder) snow will fall Saturday evening through Sunday at sunrise. This snow will fall due to a cold front, and while accumulations during this time won't be as rapid as the Friday night snow band, the snow will be colder and fluffier.

The best time to ride the resorts that are open along I-70 will likely be Saturday morning (could be snowing heavily for a few hours) and again Sunday morning with some fluffier snow on top of the previously fallen thicker snow.

It's very difficult to tell the exact timing of the Friday night snow band, and if it comes in a bit later (very possible), the heavy snow could be falling along I-70 during the morning hours. If this is the case, prepare for a few hours of low visibility and slow or stopped traffic. Again, the heavy snow band might make it through by 5-7am, but if it's later, the morning drive will be tough (so get to the mountains Friday night, would ya?!).

The second round of snow that falls on Saturday evening won't fall as rapidly as the Friday night snow band, but it will add some fluffy flakes on top of a good base, so Sunday morning could be the time to find the fluffiest snow.

The forecasts for each resort are updated and things look great!

I'll be presenting a live forecast update tonight at Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder, so come by at 8pm for that and then stay to watch one of the top ski mountaineers in the world talk about his recent adventure of skiing the volcanoes of the northwest. His name is Chris Davenport...you may have heard of him? He's done some cool stuff:-)
