Active Through Wednesday

Summary

Scattered rain and high-elevation snow will fall on Monday, Tuesday, and into Wednesday. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning looks like the time to watch for the best possible accumulations at Arapahoe Basin, the only remaining open resort along the I-70 corridor. Mostly dry weather will then prevail on Thursday and remain in place through the weekend. Active weather returns next week.

Details

Arapahoe Basin is reporting 4 inches on Monday morning. Scattered rain and high-elevation snow will continue to fall through much of the day but total accumulations will not amount to much, if anything, for areas above 11,000 feet.

We should continue to stay somewhat quiet through Monday night before another wave of energy kicks off steady showers come early Tuesday morning. These will remain in place throughout the day on Tuesday and into Tuesday evening. Come Tuesday night, we could see the action really pick up for areas along the divide. Light to moderate snow showers will continue to fall throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. For Wednesday, scattered showers will fall before we finally begin to clear out by Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. Overall, we are looking at an active next three days, with multiple chances to catch fresh snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. For travel, the road surfaces will remain wet and icy through Wednesday. The mountain passes and areas near the Eisenhower Tunnel could transition back to icy and snow-packed on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning so stay tuned to CDOT for the latest road information.

Come Thursday, mostly dry weather will settle in along the corridor. Mid-mountain temperatures will rise back into the 40s and low 50s through next weekend. There could always be a few pop up showers from time-to-time in the afternoon but these shouldn't be of much concern.

Looking ahead to next week, it looks like we will again transition back to an active pattern. The details are unknown but I think we will see periods of high-elevation snow continue for much of the second half of May.

Thanks for reading and have a great start to your week!

P.S. CDOT just released the statistics on the first winter of the I-70 Mountain Express Lane. Overall, the results were generally good with reduced travel times and increased travel speeds during peak times on the weekends. More information here: http://opsw.co/1SSxKf4
