What Is The NLT TBID & How Does It Benefit North Lake Tahoe?

The following article was sponsored in partnership with our friends at the North Tahoe Community Alliance.

The North Tahoe Community Alliance (NTCA) is an important organization for local community investments through the NLT TBID.

What is NLT TBID?

So what exactly is the NLT TBID? The Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) generates revenue and then the NTCA) reinvest it locally. Locally generated revenue reinvested locally!

The Transient Occupancy Tax is generated by overnight visitors (hotel & STR stays) and then that money goes back into workforce housing and transportation infrastructure.

Together these are known as the TOT-TBID Dollars At Work program. (Formerly the Economic Health and Community Vitality Investment Program)

How Are the Funds Invested?

The TOT-TBID Dollars At Work generated in North Lake Tahoe supports initiatives that contribute to community vitality, economic health, and environmental stewardship, and benefit residents, businesses, and visitors.

Committees convened by the NTCA consist of representatives from local businesses. They evaluate and determine which investment opportunities to fund, or recommend for funding to the Placer County Board of Supervisors, that align with categories that include workforce housing, economic development, transportation, sustainability, tourism mitigation, and trails.

One of my favorite examples of the investment of TOT-TBID Dollars At Work in destination stewardship is the ECO-CLEAN Solutions BEBOT beach cleaning robot, which you may see cleaning the beaches this summer!

All of the projects that have received funding are outlined in a new section of their website:

The TOT-TBID Dollars At Work

They fall into four categories: Workforce Housing, Environmental Stewardship & Tourism Impact Mitigation, Transportation, and Trails.

Here are a few of the projects that will be happening this summer.

  • Workforce Housing > Sierra Community House Workforce Housing Advocacy & Direction Assistance Program and/or Lease to Locals.
  • Environmental Stewardship & TIM > BEBOT Beach Cleaning Robot
  • Transportation > Workforce Vanpool
  • Trails > TCPUD Multi-Use Trails and/or North Tahoe Trail Segment 1

WinterWonderGrass:

The WinterWinterGrass Festival is supported with TBID Dollars through the Event Funding cycle, for which tickets are still available. This event contributes to all three of their pillars – community vitality (it has become a landmark of spring in Tahoe), economic health (they use local suppliers and hire local), and environmental stewardship (leading the charge on sustainable events).

In Summary:

Overall, here is what you should know about your local NTCA:

  • The NTCA is actively reinvesting funds generated in the community into programs, projects, and initiatives that align with and help achieve community vitality, economic health, and environmental stewardship.
  • You should stay informed of progress on the funded programs, projects, and initiatives, as well as actively participate in stewardship; make use of public transportation, pick up/dispose of litter in appropriate receptacles, visit during off-peak periods (for visitors), etc.
  • The NTCA is making tangible progress as it relates to putting funds generated by the TOT-TBID Dollars At Work program to work effectively on behalf of the community.

North Lake Tahoe is headed in the right direction, the driving force of our economy (tourism) can work for our community. I am confident that the NTCA is leading the region’s stewardship and stewardship education efforts in the right direction!
