Quick Update Sunday Morning
Update
Snow continued in the Sierra last night as forecasted. Moderate snow is falling in the southern Sierra this morning while lighter snow showers are expected through the morning hours up north.
Totals as of 6AM Pacific
Squaw: 28 inches (Not verified- Snow telemetry) at 8,000 feet, (7 inches at 6,000 feet)
Mammoth: 20-23 inches.
In the Rockies, snow fell as forecasted for Brundage (9 inches) and Sun Valley (5 inches). The Tetons came up short with only a few inches noted on the telemetry at JHMR (Forecasted 4-8) and Targhee
The models still show 5-9 inches of additional accumulation in these areas today favoring the northern Tetons. Most of the the snow will fall by 10PM. Yellowstone may see higher amounts where the ski areas possibly less. Currently as of 7AM, the radar was showing heavier precipitation north of the ski areas and only light snow on Teton Pass. Hopefully that drops further south!
In the Wasatch, its snowing with 2 inches reported at many resorts favoring BCC and areas north to Snowbasin. SW winds will switch to the West, NW late this morning and enhance snowfall for both the Canyons side of Park City, and Little Cottonwood. Powder Mountain can also benefit from NW flow. Yesterday, I mentioned 4-8 inch totals with an outlier of 9-14 for the Cottonwoods. Today, I am sticking with the 4-8 for most areas during Sunday. Snow will continue in the Cottonwoods tonight with NW flow cranking another 3-7 inches overnight. Total snowfall could still approach 7-15 inches. Unfortunately, its split between day skiing Sunday and a refresh for Monday morning. Perhaps some new terrain opens on Monday? It appears that Snowbasin is opening terrain under the John Paul Chair today.
For Colorado, models are still bullish for Crested Butte, Beaver Creek Monarch and the northern San Juan range (Telluride). The highest amounts might be found in the CB, Eagle County (Beaver Creek favored) and Steamboat. Some models show 5-12 inches possible for these areas. Further east towards summit may see less (4-8) primarily Sunday late AM to early Monday. Best time to ride pow will be Sunday afternoon or early on Monday.
A very active period is likely for BC and the PNW late next week! Those storms will favor the northern and central Rockies and likely bring decent cold pow to many areas by the weekend.
