Monday powder day

Summary

On Monday morning you’ll find 2-18 inches of freshies (details below) and we should see at least a few additional inches of snow during the day on Monday along with stronger winds. Get out and enjoy! After this storm, there’s a low chance for some snow around Friday the 11th and somewhat better chances early next week (Jan 14-15) and late next week (Jan 18-19).

Short Term Forecast

Sunday’s storm evolved in about the way we thought it would. The deepest snow totals were in the southern mountains and the west-central mountains.

Below are the storm totals so far, from Saturday night through Monday morning:

* Silverton: 18”
* Wolf Creek: 14” (estimate, will update when they report on Monday AM)
* Purgatory: 12”
* Crested Butte: 11”
* Snowmass: 9”
* Sunlight: 9”
* Telluride: 9”
* Aspen Mountain: 8”
* Aspen Highlands: 8”
* Beaver Creek: 5”
* Loveland: 5”
* Vail: 5”

At most mountains, at least some of the above snowfall fell after lifts closed on Sunday afternoon, so you’ll find plenty of soft snow and some untracked powder on Monday morning. A powder day is a great way to start the week!

We did see a break in the snow for a time on Sunday night, but the next wave is already moving into Colorado. You can see this wave in the radar animation below as the snow moving into west-central Colorado and the snow over northern Utah.

Most models show an additional 2-4 inches (up to 8” in areas favored by a west wind) accumulating through mid-afternoon on Monday, along with strong winds gusting to 50+ mph in the northern mountains, so watch out for some lift delays/closures, lower visibility, and wind-affected snow in exposed areas.

Below is the forecast radar from Monday morning to Tuesday morning. Note that Steamboat, Cameron Pass, and maybe Rocky Mountain National Park (areas north of I-70) could see snow accumulate on Monday evening, which could lead to fresh turns on Tuesday AM.

I hope you’re enjoying the powder!

Extended Forecast

While there are chances for snow in the next 7-10 days, none of the systems looks particularly strong at the moment.

Chances for snow will be around:

* Friday, January 11th

* Monday, January 14th

* Friday, January 18th

All of these systems look to be on the weaker side and could shift faster or slower by a day or so. I'll keep you updated as the models develop more consistency.

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Tuesday, January 8, 2019.
