Colorado Daily Snow

Heads up, there may be fresher snow! Read the latest Colorado Daily Snow

By Joel Gratz, Founding Meteorologist Posted 10 years ago March 24, 2014

Summary:

Dry Monday and Tuesday, then snowy from Wednesday night through Friday morning with total accumulations likely hitting double digits. Thursday should be a powder day, and Friday morning might offer soft turns for mountains along and north of I-70. Next weekend will be dry, then we should see snow from one (or two) storms during the first week of April.

Details:

A storm to our north is dropping clouds and wind over the northern part of the continental divide on Monday morning, but there will be no accumulations; just a few flurries. Otherwise we'll see dry weather through Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, winds will increase as the next storm moves closer, and snow showers will develop in the afternoon.

Snow will fall from Wednesday night through Friday morning, with about 3-5 inches Wednesday night (perhaps double that in the southern San Juans), another 3-5 inches Thursday, and 2-4 inches for the northern mountains on Thursday night. I did not change the forecast from yesterday because I don't have any more confidence in the details of the storm. While the models generally agree on the timing, there are still differences in the storm's strength and position and until these get resolved (by Tuesday night, most likely), I won't have enough confidence to change the forecast very much.

Thursday does look like a powder day for many areas, and Thursday last run or Friday first run could offer the best turns as the snow might be deep enough to hide some of the crust on non north-facing slopes.

Then Friday afternoon through next weekend should be dry.

Long Range:

The first week of April should offer at least one, if not two additional storms, but there is no consistency between the models on timing or strength of the systems. The models do generally agree that Colorado and the west will see significant precipitation over the next 10 days, with Colorado getting an about inch of precipitation during the storm at the end of this week, and perhaps another 0.5-1.0 inches during the storm(s) next week.
