Dry, Warm Storm, then a Big Break
Summary
Overall the forecast is on track. We will have a few more days of calm weather before the next storm moves through Wednesday through Friday. Temperatures will be warm for this storm so snow levels will be higher than they have been. Things look calm from the weekend through the end of the month.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Monday 12/19 - Tuesday 12/20
Monday through Tuesday will remain warm and dry, ahead of the next system. Temperatures will be several degrees above normal, getting several degrees above freezing, especially on Monday. Enjoy the warmth.
Forecast for Wednesday 12/21 - Friday 12/23
Our next system moves in to the Pyrenees in the early hours Wednesday, and in to the Alps around sunrise Wednesday morning. This still looks like a moderate system with snow levels in the 1200-1500m range, with some of that clear stuff at the bases of some resorts. Accumulations look modest, in the 5-15 cm range, with higher totals at the upper elevations along the France/Italy and Switzerland/Italy borders, where some totals around 30cm are possible. Snow map for this storm is below.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Saturday 12/24 - Wednesday 12/28
Not much has changed in the long range. The models still show a strong ridge building over the heart of Europe on Christmas Eve. This ridge looks fairly stubborn, and may stick around for almost a week. There are some signs of a storm to the North bringing the northern side of the Alps some snow around the 27th, but there is disagreement among the models at this time. We the models sort this upper level pattern out, I will update you on it.
