Knee Deep in the Pyrenees, and More Is on the Way

Summary

It will be stormy and snowy through early next week as the upper-level low drops south of the Alps and retrogrades toward the Atlantic. As this occurs, snow will linger through the middle of next week or even longer. The next chance for a more organized storm will be next weekend, but the models haven't sorted out the storm track yet.

Short Term Forecast

I will just have a quick update today as yesterday's post dug deep into the details of this ongoing storm. Several more days of snow are expected as this storm slowly moves through the western Alps. The Pyrenees and northern Apennines remain the focus during the latter stages of this second part of the storm cycle, and an additional .5 - 1 m is possible in these areas.

Periods of heavy snow are expected through Monday before the intensity decreases overall as the storm lingers through midweek. The westernmost parts of the central French Alps, the southwestern Italian Alps, and the eastern Italian Alps will continue to see heavy snow as well, with an additional 25 - 50 cm expected. The rest of the Alps will add 10 - 20 cm, with up to 30 cm for much of the Austrian Alps.

I show the high-resolution WRF model below, which provides the additional snow forecasted for the Pyrenees, Alps, and northern Apennines through midweek.

After this storm winds down around Wednesday or Thursday of next week, we still have that upper-level low dropping down from the north into eastern Europe later in the week. The models have continued to take this storm farther east, too far east to even impact the Austrian Alps.

At the start of the GIF, you can see this upper-level storm passing to the east of the Alps. A few days later, this model brings a storm into the Alps from the west, around the 14th/15th. I think this will be our next chance for accumulating snow.

Extended Forecast

The storm track then looks to shift to the north, with a strong and deep upper-level low developing over Scandinavia. This pattern often brings the upper-level low farther south eventually, or at least sends some short waves rotating around the upper low down into the Alps. However, this setup also can result in storms that lack cold air, with it staying tied into the upper-level low in the north. That's nearly two weeks from now though, so I will keep an eye on it and let you know when it becomes more clear.

My next post will be on Monday.
