Epic Storm Winding Down
Summary
The major storm that's been hammering the Alps and Pyrenees to some extent, too, is wrapping up today, with some lingering snow showers in the eastern Alps. This storm dropped significant snow across a wide region in the northern and western Alps, setting up great conditions for the holidays. The ridge moving in this week will keep things dry for the next week to ten days.
Short Term Forecast
It's been dumping across the Alps for the past few days, with big totals coming out of the northern French Alps, the Swiss Alps, and the western Austrian Alps. Here are a few totals I've seen through Monday night.
- Plateau d'Assy, FR: 50 cm
- La Roserie, FR: 70 - 80 cm
- Hoch-Ybrig, SZ: 45 cm
- Lech/St. Anton/Warth, AU: 40 cm
- Engelberg, SZ: 97 cm
Below is a shot from the deep snow at La Roserie in France.
We'll see how much more fell overnight and also during the day today for the final numbers.
Temperatures will remain cold on Tuesday before starting to climb on Wednesday as the ridge nudges its way into western Europe. We should see a lot of sunshine across the Alps starting on Tuesday in the west and then in the east on Wednesday. Temperatures will continue to climb through about midweek before the ridge starts to shift, allowing some slightly cooler air into the region.
The ridge is still expected to stay for about a week. Once it breaks down and starts to move to the east, the storm door will reopen. Nothing obvious in that regard at the moment, but at least the chance will be back on the table.
Extended Forecast
There are some small signs of a storm moving in from the northwest around the 3rd or the 4th, but it's low confidence at this time.
My next post will be on Wednesday.
