Monday Pow Day, Active Pattern Continues
Summary
The storm has delivered solid snow totals so far in the Pyrenees and southern Alps. The models have trended wetter for the additional periods of snow through the end of the week, especially in the southern Alps. Snow will be falling in the southern Alps and Pyrenees for most of the next five days, with significant totals by the end of the week.
Short Term Forecast
We're off to a good start with this storm, with significant totals already showing up in the Pyrenees (40 cm) and southern Alps (20 cm). Monday was a solid pow day and there's more on the way this week. The snow is wrapping up in the Pyrenees but will continue in the southern Alps through the evening.
The next round of snow has moved into the Pyrenees and southwestern Alps but is mainly light at this time. The far southwestern Alps and then the southern Italian Alps will see moderate to heavy snow starting Tuesday night while the rest of the Alps and Pyrenees should see mainly light snow.
From Wednesday night through Thursday night, precipitation will become light and more scattered again, but another round of heavier snow is expected on Friday, especially in the southern Italian Alps. By Saturday morning precipitation will turn lighter once again but should continue through the weekend. Temperatures remain somewhat warm overall, so I don't expect any amazing pow days, but Wednesday through Friday will feature fresh snow, especially in the southern Alps.
Below are the latest five-day snow forecasts for the Alps and Pyrenees.
The European model is showing some accumulations in the northern Alps in Austria that the other models aren't really picking up on, courtesy of some convergence in the region from the southerly flow from the low over Spain and a second low dropping down from the north. This would occur on Thursday and Friday, but we will see if the models are sticking with this come Thursday morning.
Accumulations in the Pyrenees will be lighter this week, with 10 - 20 cm expected for most of the range. As the low drops down from the north midweek, the northern side of the Pyrenees will be briefly favored, and this could push totals over 25 cm this week.
Early next week, a ridge will move into central Europe, putting a break to the active weather. The low that was parked over southwestern Europe near Spain will set up a bit farther west, allowing for some additional chances for snow in the Pyrenees but the Alps should be mostly dry.
Extended Forecast
Things look dry in the long-range, with ridging over central Europe expected until the week of the 23rd. There isn't much of a signal for a wetter pattern to set up around that time, but the dry signal is less strong. I don't see any signs for a big storm but that's still a ways away, so I wouldn't worry about it too much just yet.
My next post will be on Wednesday.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
