Thanksgiving Travel Period...

Summary

Mostly sunny and mild into the weekend. Next week will be colder with the chance for a few storms to bring some snow to the mountains. The first storm moves through with some snow Monday, with the next storm possibly Thursday.

Update

Dry Pattern:

We should remain dry through Sunday with no weather-related travel issues expected.

Pattern Change:

We will undergo a pattern change starting Monday that could last into the beginning of December. It will open the door to storms, but the track of each down the coast from the north will vary and small shifts in the track could change the snowfall forecasts dramatically from none up to significant snowfall.

The first storm could move in with snow by midday Monday. Snow levels likely drop to 6000 ft. at the start which is below pass levels. Then below 4000 ft. by the end of Monday evening.

The snowfall currently doesn't look very heavy. We could see 1-3 inches of snow over the passes by the end of the day on Monday. That could bring chain controls over the passes between Monday morning through evening, and possibly through Truckee to near the NV state line if heavy enough. Then clearing out Monday night.

We will continue to watch the trends on this storm to see if we could see more or less snow. Be prepared for possible chain controls and slow travel through the northern Sierra Monday.

Long-Range:

The latest forecast model runs show the chance for another storm next Thursday the 1st and Saturday the 3rd that could bring more snow to the Sierra. Each system's track will determine the storm's impact.

We will update the timing and potential impacts as we get closer. If you plan to travel through the northern Sierra through December 3rd be prepared for potential slow travel and winter driving conditions.
