3" new at Silver and Lookout, final weekend coming up!

Summary

Silver and Lookout got the powder goods on Easter Sunday, and 3-5" more as of Wednesday morning. They'll be reopening on Saturday with a wintry mix for the final weekend of the season. Another 2-5" are forecast to fall at Silver by Thursday, and 2" are forecast at Lookout with a mix of rain/snow. Snow levels will bounce up and down leading up to the final weekend. Springtime in the Rockies!

Short Term Forecast

Fresh pow at Silver Mountain on Sunday (courtesy Silver Mountain).

It's been great to see winter finish off with a bang in April throughout the state of Idaho. Cooler weather and more snow are forecast through the end of April for the backcountry skiers who are out and about climbing for their turns in the mountains.

Silver Mountain will be reopening on Saturday for the final day of the skiing/riding season in Kellogg. The Leadman 2022 Ski/Bike/Run Triathlon will be happening on Saturday as well.

2-5" of new snow are forecast to fall Wednesday night/Thursday at Silver. Fresh snow will be waiting for skiers/riders on Saturday morning. There's a slight chance of light snow on Saturday and mainly partly cloudy/sunny with a high of 41 degrees at Silver. Mostly sunny on Sunday and a high of 45 degrees for those who might be doing some hiking at Silver on Sunday.

Snow forecast through Sunday (GFS ensemble model).

Snow levels will be bouncing around at Lookout Pass between the storm system coming through on Wednesday night/Thursday and this weekend. Snow levels are forecast in the 4,800-foot range Wednesday night. 2" of new snow is forecast on Thursday at Lookout, but it could rain on top of the new snow by Thursday afternoon.

Party sunny skies are forecast on Saturday when Lookout reopens for the weekend. A weak warm front will bring a wintry mix on Saturday, with snow levels starting at the base area in the morning and then climbing to 6,000 feet by mid-afternoon. Mostly sunny skies are forecast on Sunday with a high of 48 degrees at Lookout.

FYI - the Thursday storm cycle is expected to bring another 9"-10" of new snow to Brundage and Tamarack, 5" to Schweitzer, and 12" to Pomerelle.

Extended Forecast

Low pressure will be in control looking into next week with the door wide open for more chances of mountain snow.

Snowpack map as of Wednesday, April 20, shows N. Idaho in a strong position and S. Idaho basins catching up with the winter-like weather we've had in April.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Saturday morning, April 23.
