2" new Sat. AM, big storm Sunday, more to come this week!

Summary

The first dose of light snow dropped 2-3" overnight at Schweitzer and Silver, and 2" at Brundage, Tamarack and Bogus Basin to provide a fresh coating for turns Saturday morning. Skies will clear off briefly and then a major snow storm hits N. Idaho ski areas Sat night/Sun AM with big winds; 6-8" of new is forecast. That storm will hit C. and S. Idaho Sun PM/Mon AM, with 4-8" possible.

Short Term Forecast

Twin cold fronts and a low pressure trough are moving into Idaho and the Northwest, bringing a steady series of snow storms this weekend and next week. The new weather pattern is bringing colder temps by Sunday and Monday, with lows in the single digits at N. Idaho ski areas.

The Sunday storm event in N. Idaho could be a bit messy with high winds forecast in the 25-35 mph range, and gusts to 45-55 mph. The high winds are forecast to occur Saturday night and Sunday morning, and taper during the morning hours on Sunday. Snow totals in the Panhandle could hit 8-9" with that storm system by noon on Sunday, with a few more inches expected by Monday AM.

At Brundage, Tam and Bogus Basin, skies will clear off on Saturday briefly after the 2" event. Then the next wave of snow comes on Sunday, Sunday night and Monday, bringing a total of 5-8" at those ski areas, and 6-12" at the highest mountain peaks by Monday night.

Sun Valley, Pomerelle, Solder and Magic are forecast to get in on those freshies, with 4-8" forecast max in those areas. Sun Valley will likely get more like 4" for that storm cycle.

Extended Forecast

A short break in the action will occur on Tuesday, and then another major storm event is forecast on Wednesday-Thursday, when the low pressure trough will be camped over the top of Idaho. 12-20" are forecast at the N. Idaho resorts for that storm cycle, 17-18" at Brundage and Tam, 10-12" at Bogus Basin and Soldier Mountain, and 4-8" at Sun Valley, Pomerelle and Magic. Pebble Creek should get some significant snow from that storm system as well.

That mid-week storm system could keep recirculating in Idaho and bringing more freshies on Friday and Saturday before it weakens and pushes east.

If these snow totals come through during next week, it should help Idaho's ski areas open up more terrain and set them up for a great December!
