Cold temps, wind chill Monday; warmer and partial sunshine through Thurs

Summary

Glad to see the Fri/Sat storm deliver the goods nearly statewide! An Arctic cold front will bring very cold temps Sunday night into Monday, with a Northwest flow and below-zero wind chill statewide. A high pressure system will move into position squarely over Idaho by Wed-Thurs, bringing mostly sunny skies and warmer temps each day. Next chance of significant snow is Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Photo is courtesy Magic Mountain, near Twin Falls, where they got 8" of new snow Friday and Saturday.

Noteworthy 72-hour snow totals from the latest storm system:

  • Pebble Creek - 20"
  • Lookout Pass - 15"
  • Silver Mountain - 15"
  • Pomerelle - 10"
  • Brundage  - 8"
  • Bogus Basin - 7"
  • Schweitzer - 6"
  • Tamarack - 3"

The frigid Arctic air mass will remain over Idaho through Monday night. Be sure to dress very warm for skiing/riding on Monday because of below-zero wind chill expected statewide with Northwest winds. Temperatures will moderate beginning on Tuesday and warm up to the mid-20s by Wednesday and close to 30 by Thursday at Lookout and Bogus Basin.

A dome of high pressure and a change to more of a SW flow will allow the temperature to warm up mid-week and provide some bluebird ski days. Sun Valley should have bluebird conditions for the next 7 days in a row.

Central and Southern Idaho ski areas will see partly cloudy to sunny skies Wednesday and Thursday.

A slight chance of snow will occur at the Idaho Panhandle resorts Monday night/TuesdayTuesday night but no significant accumulation is expected. Maybe a couple of inches max by Tuesday night. Skies will be partly cloudy to cloudy in the Panhandle Wednesday and Thursday.

Extended Forecast

A Low pressure trough is expected to move into our region by Friday and bring a chance of snow, Friday-Monday. Snow amounts look pretty light right now with a chance of 1-2" of new each day, and the best chance of snow on Monday, Feb. 6.

Idaho Mountain Snowpack/Snow-Water Equivalent map as of Jan. 29 shows above-average snowpack nearly everywhere statewide and some 150% of normal values. All good for Idaho's ski areas, backcountry skiing, whitewater rafting next summer and and the coming year's water supply for irrigation.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
