Still very cold Tuesday, warming up nicely Wed-Thurs

Summary

The Arctic air mass hunkered down over Idaho and the Northern Rockies will continue for one more day on Tuesday, with wind chill factors in the below-zero range in the Idaho Panhandle, Central Idaho, Pomerelle and Pebble Creek in particular (-27 F Tuesday). High pressure and a warm front moving in Wednesday-Thursday will bring temps into the high 20s to low 30s statewide with sunshine.

Short Term Forecast

Bundle up well for skiing/riding on a chilly Tuesday in most locations with below-zero wind chill. The cold temps won't be as extreme for Boise-area skiers/riders at Bogus Basin, which will see a high of 20 degrees on Tuesday. The cold air mass will be especially pronounced in the Panhandle, Sun Valley, Pomerelle and Pebble Creek.

Two quick-hitting storms will hit the Idaho Panhandle region on Tuesday afternoon, and again during the ski day on Wednesday, bringing the potential of a half-inch to an inch of new snow at Schweitzer, Silver and Lookout with each storm event. That system may provide a dusting at Brundage, depending on how far south it reaches.

High pressure moving in off the coast, combined with a warm front, will warm up temps Wed-Thurs with mostly sunny skies. That'll be a significant change to see the temps rise 15-30 degrees in one day's time in many locations. The cold will linger another day at Pomerelle and Pebble until warming up on Thursday.

There's a 20 percent chance of snow on Friday, and more unstable conditions will prevail over the weekend as the High ridge moves to the east and a Low trough moves into Idaho from the coast. The Low is expected to weaken as it moves inland. Right now, the best chance of snow looks to be on Sunday, with a 50 percent chance in most locations statewide.

European ensemble snow forecast through next Monday, Feb. 6 shows the weekend storm activity to mainly favor the Idaho Panhandle resorts, Brundage, Tamarack and Bogus Basin.

Extended Forecast

Unstable weather is forecast to continue through Wednesday of next week with a Low trough overhead in Idaho. OpenSnow forecasts are showing some decent chances of accumulation during the first half of next week. With a Low pressure trough expected to centered over Idaho, that looks promising, although the deepest part of the low looks to be centered over the top of Southern Cal and Tahoe area (shown by darker blue colors).

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Thursday, Feb. 2.
