Spring-like temperatures for today and tomorrow

Summary

A very warm stretch of weather has arrived in New England. Expect soft, spring-like conditions for today and tomorrow. High temperatures for today will be in the mid-upper 40s, accompanied by light rain showers across the region. Temperatures will continue to rise into the 50s on Wednesday under mostly cloudy skies. Colder temperatures in the 20s return on Thursday. Several storm systems will pass through our region over the weekend, bringing a mix of rain and snow.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning, all! New England is currently in the midst of a very warm stretch of weather. Temperatures made it into the upper 30s yesterday, and remained in that range overnight. Temperatures will continue to be on the rise today, with highs in the mid-upper 40s expected. Resorts in southern Vermont, southern New Hampshire, and Massachusetts could see temperatures as high as 50.

Unfortunately, scattered rain showers will accompany these warmer temperatures throughout the day today. Periods of freezing rain are possible for higher elevations to the north during the morning hours, and will eventually turn over to rain. Here is the current radar loop:

These showers began last night in association with a warm front making its way across our region. Light rain showers may linger into the late afternoon-evening hours, and will cease completely during the overnight hours into Wednesday. The exception to this is upstate New York, which will likely receive additional light rain showers ahead of a cold front on Wednesday morning-afternoon. Wednesday looks to be the warmest day this week, with highs reaching into the 50s across New England. Skies will remain mostly cloudy on Wednesday, with some partial clearing possible. Winds will also be fairly gusty on Wednesday, with gusts reaching upwards of 35-40 mph. Here is the temperature outlook for today and Wednesday:

Expect a significant reduction in terrain area by Wednesday at many resorts, particularly in terms of glade skiing / sidecountry areas. However, well-maintained trails with sufficient base depths will be able to withstand this thaw, bringing very spring-like snow conditions. Wednesday will be a decent day for skiing and snowboarding, especially if you like soft, mashed potato snow and warm temperatures.

Extended Forecast

Below-freezing temperatures will reinstate themselves over New England during the overnight hours on Wednesday and into Thursday morning as a cold front passes through. Thursday will remain mostly cloudy, with high temperatures in the upper 20s. A quick-moving low pressure system will traverse southern New England on Thursday afternoon-evening, but snow accumulations will likely not exceed 1”, and would likely only affect resorts in Massachusetts and southern Vermont.

Most of New England will see mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-upper 20s to start the day on Friday. Afterwards, New England will see a very active stretch of weather going into the weekend. The storm system moving in on Friday evening will likely bring a mix of rain-snow to most resorts. Precipitation will continue into the day on Saturday, falling mostly as rain. A more organized low pressure system will follow on Sunday, which looks to be bringing a greater chance for snowfall. Here is the most recent model run for Friday through Sunday:

We will have a better idea of the precipitation type and timing of these weekend storm systems in the coming days. Thanks for reading!
