Rain expected this afternoon, drier conditions follow

Summary

Conditions over New England are currently cloudy as a cold front prepares to swing through our area later today. Mixed precipitation is expected this afternoon that will transition fully to rain into the evening hours. Showers will move out of the region on Wednesday, followed by partial clearing. Daytime temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 30s for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The chance for light snow remains in the forecast for the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning! The New England region is currently under overcast skies as we wait for a cold front to move into our area. High temperatures for today are expected to reach the upper 30s - lower 40s. The image below is from the Wildcat Mountain webcam.

Precipitation from this cold front will begin this afternoon and become heavier into the evening hours. Higher elevations will likely see a snow-sleet mix that will transition to rain later in the afternoon. Warmer air channeled in from the south will prevent temperatures from dropping below freezing. Tuesday's precipitation will make opening more terrain difficult for many resorts in New England. A radar image of the approaching precipitation is shown below.

The rain should move past New England during the morning on Wednesday, allowing colder temperatures to move in behind the front. Higher elevations may wake up to a dusting of snow in the morning, but no measurable snowfall is expected. Skies are expected to clear later in the day Wednesday with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. Temperatures are expected to drop a few degrees overnight, with lows in the upper 20s. This will give many resorts the opportunity to make snow.

Extended Forecast

Mostly cloudy conditions with temperatures in the low to mid 30s will continue to be the trend on Thursday and Friday. A few light snow showers are possible for higher elevations during the day Thursday. The chance for more precipitation returns as we move into the weekend. A trough over the Eastern US has become well amplified over the past few days, which could drive the formation of another storm system on Friday. There is still a fair amount of uncertainty regarding this system and if it will bring precipitation to the northern regions or move offshore.

Temperatures on Saturday will be in the mid 30s, with lows in the 20s overnight. We will continue to monitor the chance for precipitation on Sunday into Monday. Check back tomorrow for additional updates on this weekends conditions. Thanks for reading!
