Powder Friday, then on the edge of the storm track

Update

This week has been dry, and that will change on Thursday night as a moist storm moves across the Rockies.

The brunt of the storm will likely stay just to the north of New Mexico, and we’ll still see snow from late Thursday night through Friday afternoon.

An average of 3-6 inches is a reasonable forecast, with 4-8+ inches for areas further north. The best powder will be on Friday midday thanks to the snow from Thursday night plus more snow accumulating during daylight hours on Friday. Enjoy!

Looking ahead, all models agree that the general weather pattern for next week and the final week of January will bring colder air to the eastern 2/3rds of the United States and Canada, and this will leave New Mexico on the southwestern edge of the storm track (the pink line below).

This pattern usually is not favorable for significant snow in New Mexico, but, if the pattern wobbles just a little bit to the west, chances for snow every few days will increase.

For now, it looks like we’ll be brushed by weaker systems around Monday night (January 21-22) and also around Thursday to Friday, January 24-25.

Thanks for reading!

My next update will be on Monday, January 21.
