Rain Event Wed & Thu, But Snow Likely Towards End of Week
Summary
Southern Lakes picked up 10–35cm of snow late last week, with ideal conditions Saturday before winds disrupted Sunday. Canterbury got 5–10cm. Monday and Tuesday look clear, but a wet, windy front will hit midweek. Cooler temps and fresh snow return by Friday.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Monday 23rd & Tuesday 24th June
Clouds will lift from South Island ski areas on Monday morning, giving way to a cracker of a day as southerly winds ease.
Tuesday will bring more sunshine, though cloud may build over the Southern Lakes later as nor’westerlies strengthen.
Forecast for Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th June
Wednesday’s looking rough on the slopes, with howling nor’westers—especially in Canterbury—likely to impact lift operations. Showers from the west arrive in the morning, turning heavy over the Southern Lakes by evening and reaching Canterbury later overnight. Sadly, the snowpack is set to take a hit.
By Thursday, rain clears early from the Southern Lakes and by midday in Canterbury as winds ease back. Skies will then brighten, setting up a decent afternoon.
Extended Forecast
A low from the west on Friday and Saturday will drag in cold southeasterlies across the South Island, potentially bringing heavy snow as moisture is squeezed out over the Alps. Current forecasts lean toward Canterbury seeing the brunt, but that could still shift—better clarity expected by Wednesday.
A chillier push from the south on Sunday may bring a bonus top-up, with excellent snowmaking conditions likely early next week as high pressure returns and helps undo midweek rain damage.
Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out early Wednesday.
