Sunday Snow, Monday Cold...

Summary

Colder air and snow showers move through Sunday. Clearing but cold Monday. Drier weather continues through Thursday with warming temperatures. A weak system may or may not reach the Sierra Friday, and then a wetter storm is possible for next Sunday the 5th.

Update

Sunday Cold & Snow:

Snow is moving in Sunday morning with a band of steady snow expected to move through during the morning hours. Then scattered snow showers diminish later in the day into Sunday evening. Much colder air pours south into the region with highs dropping into the 20s.

The winds drop off in the morning as the low moves over the region and then switch east and increase through the afternoon. Ridgetop gusts up to 30+ mph during the afternoon. That will make it feel even colder so layer up.

The snowfall forecast hasn't changed much over the last few days. Here is the final forecast for totals expected by early Monday morning when the snowfall is measured and reported:

  • 1-4 inches at the base.
  • 2-5 inches at mid-mountain elevations.
  • 3-6 inches up top.

With the cold air, the snow ratios will be high with dry powdery snow falling on the mountain. The skiing should be fun Sunday, but it will be cold.

Monday Cold & Wind:

Monday will be mostly sunny and cold with highs only in the teens on the mountain and near 20 at the base. Ridgetop winds from the east continue to be gusty making it feel even colder. Gusts up to 40-50+ mph up top. Overnight lows are in the single digits Sunday and Monday nights.

Tuesday - Thursday:

Mostly sunny skies continue through Thursday. Highs warming into the 30s Tuesday, and 40s for Wed - Thu. The winds become lighter starting Tuesday into Wednesday. They increase from the southwest Thursday with ridgetop gusts up to 40-50+ mph by afternoon.

Long-Range:

By Friday, a trough is forecast to push into the West Coast. That could bring a return of storms next weekend. The latest model runs show a weak system possible on Friday that may fall apart by the time it reaches us. We'll continue to watch the trends this week.

Then a wetter storm is possible for next Sunday the 5th. This storm could be our next shot at seeing accumulating snowfall. We'll be tracking this storm all week as well, with more details as we closer.
