Snow Showers Continue

Summary

Snow showers will continue today with a few inches possible today then another few inches possible tonight. We are in a cool and generally dry pattern, however weak disturbances will bring chances for occasional snow over the next week to 10 days.

Short Term Forecast

Cold core is pushing thru the Great Basin today and it will generate some snow showers this afternoon.  These showers are scattered in nature as you can see on the HRRR simulated radar:

Because these are scattered, accumulations are difficult to forecast.  If you get hit by a good shower this afternoon, a few inches of fresh is certainly possible.  Conversely, you could get missed and see nothing.  But there's a chance!

These snow showers will continue on Monday as well with additional chances for modest accumulation.  Then a bit of a break Tuesday and Wednesday before another system drops down the west coast and crosses to our south late Wednesday thru Friday.  This system could bring a chance for a few additional snow showers to northern Utah but the state's biggest impacts will be in southern Utah.

Overall, the next week will be cool with a few chances for snow but accumulations will generally be light.  Not a bad pattern to maintain high snow quality and good ski conditions.

Extended Forecast

Looking at the extended, the ridge that has been parked in the eastern pacific in the Gulf of AK will nudge its way a bit closer to the coast. This will force systems to come in over land which means less moisture -- hence the cold but relatively small systems.  The GFS has a better storm pushing in early next week (~Feb 25th).  However, the Euro keeps this system to our west and closes off the low similar to previous systems.  We'll just have to wait and see.  I don't see any signs of massive high pressure.
