The Train is Finally Out of Steam

Summary

Snow showers will again be possible today. Over the next week, we will have cool conditions with additional chances for mostly light snow from weak systems.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday, we had a good area of snowfall develop along the Wasatch front in the SLC valley area. I picked up a very quick 4" of snow at my place. I was hopefully it would be able to move up into the Cottonwoods/PC and we could get ourselves I sleeper powder day for today.  In the end, it wasn't to be. The SE flow that prevailed yesterday is not known for being great for snowfall.  Still, several resorts are reporting a few inches of fresh snow today, so perhaps at the very least we'll have some nice soft turns.  Conditions have been so good this weekend that I'm betting they will be great again today.

Weather today is similar to yesterday, we have a cold core of the system meandering across the region still.  Not much to this feature, but when you get daytime heating involved, it's enough to fire up a few snow showers.  Today we should once again see a few afternoon snow showers develop but accumulations will generally be light.

The big train of storms is at an end. Sure, we'll have some chances for light snow over the next 7 days, but essentially we are done for now.  If you've been rallying powder as much as possible, give yourself a pat on the back. It's been a month of seemingly storm after storm.  What do we have to show for it? Well, I've seen a ton of powder days, but aside from that... check out the snowpack!

All blue baby!  Not often we see that, especially this time of year.  Every basin in the state is at least 110% of normal, with southwestern Utah as high as 171% of normal.

Extended Forecast

After a general break on Tuesday into early Wednesday, the next system will approach late Wednesday thru Thursday.  This storm is dropping down to our west, then will push east across the southern Great Basin.  Biggest impacts will be southern Utah where some decent accumulations could be possible on Thursday.  Northern Utah will likely only see some light snow showers with minimal accumulation.

Another break Friday into Saturday before another system drops down out of the northwest on Sunday.  Still very early but it looks like we should have another chance for snow showers -- doesn't look overly strong at this point.  Then, it looks like we could see a more extended break to close out February into early March.
